NEW 2008 update

Nope, not off the planet guys, just doing a lot stuff and have very much neglected the site. lots of things have changed for the charters though and I wanted to up-date all of you that check in. First, all is good with me.....never better infact! I have sold the 20' boat and have a very small and agile 14' alum john that I have outfitted to fish the grass flats there at the beach and backwaters. Charters will be a very personal one on one and will be fly fishing only....and most of it will be polling in very shallow water....or anchored in shallow water..but rest asssured that it's all A-game..not and entry level experence. So, get charged up and give me a call to hit the grass for tailing redfish....and maybe even a Shark if we are lucky.

Second, While this site will still be up and Running, I will begin posting all my reports on the Field and Stream sports's site....It's just a better site and posting pics is a lot easier and its interactive so you can ask questions or make comments and even add your pics and post too!!!  I will place a line to the site and then you can bookmark if you want.

Looking forward to hearing from a few of you!!!

A very merry Christmas to all my friends and clients!! This is just about the last report for the year so I'll just keep this brief. The Trout were not biting for me Saturday but the water temp had dropped to the 40's and did warm up to the 50ish mark by lunch. Good friend Brandon Eatman managed the slam (striper, speck and Puppy Drum) for the day but it was slow catching for sure. I think it was just a combonation of full moon, easterly wind and ultra clear water. Fishing should remail very decent for a while longer with the temps moderating and warming the water a bit more. Brandon used the Tusanami bait in a very natural color. I used the fly but no tags yesterday for me.

Stop by Field and Stream Sports this weekend and Monday for some last minute shopping for that sportsman in the family..or yourself!! That have just got in Browning Jewelery, window logos and much other stuff. They have some of the motion deterction cameras that you can place in your hunting area to see what is moving while you are not there and lots of hunting clothing too. Carthart, and others with some clothing on sale too. Fishing baits of all the best colors and they have the Mirror lures taht are now catching fish in the river. Your stortsman will really be thanking you for te gift and if you are not sure of what they may want, F&SS has gift cards...that's EASY SHOPPING right there.

Lastly, I want to thank all of my sponcers and friends for helping make this year a very great year for Speckrigg Charters.

Merry CHRISTmas, Happy New Year and GOD bless all of you!!

Fred

Here in New Bern the fishng still remains very decent for the Trout and stripershope it holds together and the weather dosent freeze. The stripers are still hanging tuff on the bridges and structurelots of small fish mixed with a few decent keepers. I tend to either catch nice sized ones or smaller ones in one area or the other so if you are just catching the smaller ones and want larger ones..you might want to move to a different location. Live Eels are working as well as some Mud Minnowswhich you can pick up there in Minnisott from Dave at Minnisott Bait. I dont know if he has any eels but Field and Stream Sports does. Artificals are still working and the topwater smaller spooks and 7M mirrilures are working too.  The trout are hitting both floating and subsurface lures like the Mirrorlures 17s, 19s, and the Catch 2000 series baits. Good results with red backs and the natural colors.witht he naturals getting the nod as far as I can tell. Flyfishing is still bvery productive here in the river for both stripers and trout and the ocational Redfish too. I saw a nice sized puppydrum last weekend just sitting on the bank in 12" of waterthat was the first time I saw that there in the riverit was cool to see for sure and of course I missed him too!!! All the creeks seem to be holding fish.some more than others and some of the fish are bigger in some creeks than others too.

I may take a few trips into January this year.it seems the fishing is running long here so Ill take charters till the fishing is non dependable..

Call me for the no fish, no pay detailsand the winter rates here out of New Bern

Last night the wind which had been blowing pretty hard out of the N had the water blown out about as far as I had seen it in a long time. As I crossed the Trent river bridge on 70, the water was drawn back to reval at least 25ft of the bank that usally is in the grass reeds a foot or soguess it must have been down a couple of feet or better. I dont think this matters so much but will surly relocate the fish for a few days in the creeks but not so much in the main river here in New Bern. The stripers up to that time have been pretty consistant! And even a few Specks still here in and even above New Bern. The RR trestle, AR reef Stumpages and secluded piles have fish on them and until the bait and the water temps drophopefully will stay for a while. The other night , we stayed there till darkthirty and the Shad came to the top and started flipping..big shad too.  Its been since my childhood since I saw Bunker here in the river this late.just like the old days.

Specks are still in most of the creeks but it may or maynot take a few days for them to get situated with the water shifing like it did. On the stripers.its  Shadlins and mudminnows in pearl or mullet color and the mid-sized Zarra are working really good.for both the specks and stripersThe trout are taking little fishes, topwaters like Ratlin rouges, rebels and walk the dog style baits. Its a pretty good time for flyangling too. Most of the time thats what Im doing when Im on the boat with myself or friends..its been sometimes better than the spinningor at least as productive. Clowsers, Bigeyes in olive /wt, cht/ white/ and white will worksometimes a yellow is better here in New Bern when the water cools moredunno why! And of course a big shiner either on the bottom or under a bobber is a good deal too. All of the biats I use comes from Field and Stream Sports here in New Bernso if its a color thingjust go there and the staff will get you the colors that are working here on the river and creeksFSS is also a place where you can bring your citation sized fish and get them weighedAnd FSS has a huge selection of tackle. They have all your hunting appereal from Columbia, Carthart and others. Lots of Dove shells for the last season and of course lots of stuff for duckhunting. They are also running some sales there with some seasonal items reduced up to 25% off the reg. Stop by when in New Bern

Its been pretty good here on the river this past week and I think the fishing will be pretty consistant for a while to come.maybe well into December! Time will tell on that. Although I have made a few trips to the beach to fish for the albacore, I have spend a few good days here on the river here in New Bern. The stripers have really taken off and consistant catches of at least a limit are very good now.and if you are lucky more than a limit youll catch!! From Flyfishing to casting to trolling the stripers are in locations that will make it easy to try for them. Youll find them now in the shallows early and as the sun moves up, they stripers have moved to deeper water and baits that run 5ft or more are the better bet. But when the conditions prevail and the day is heavily overcast the fishing will be extended in the shallow and even in the deeper water they will take some topwater plugswhich are a treat!! Size of the fish is anywhere from 16" to a few clost to 30 with the main population in the 18 to 21 inch group and weighing in at 2.8 to 3lbs.

Zaras and poppers for topwaters and Traps in chrome and black are also a good style. Bagleys Bombers and Cordell Redfin and Ratlin Rouges are also good stick baits and the Rebels are good to.I like the jointed Rebels personally with the big lips for trolling. Ive been catching a few decent sized specks while striper fishing so that may be an incidental catch while in the stripersnot a bad thing there!!! Specks are in all the creeks.and I dont think one creek is really any better than the others.each creek in the past 2 weeks have had some awesome trips come from them!! From 3.5inc D.O.A. in white to 1/4oz jigs and plastics to # 17 and #19 mirror luresif the fish were biting you had to only get it in there to catch. Good colors of late have been pearl, white, new penny jerk, curly tails, and spade tails too. Old Bayside Mudminow and the Shadlin are working for me in plastics. Live boat is also a good bet and the big minnows from Field and Stream Sports here in New Bern under the bobber will get a striper or speck to bitesometimes when they will refuse a artifical.

I have a few days that are availablegive me a call. Starting in December, Ill do a few trips in the afternoon and on the weekends both in the morning and afternoon. Winter rates will apply. Call me for this special.no fish, no pay!!!

Till next time

11/18/07

Over the weekend..Saturday was only so-so with some fish caught early then puttering out fast. Sunday was a bit better here on the river and better yet @ the beach. Flies are working well here in the river and the plastics on light jig heads are too. Suspending baits like the Mirrolure #s 17 and 19 are working in the 6 or less water and 52 in a bit deeper are a good choice too. Old Bayside Shadlins and the Mud Minno with spade tails are both good choices to use. I like the pearl and Charturce and natural colors. Live shrimp are also good choices if you can get them. Field and stream sports in New Bern have all the baits I use and many others. They have a large assortment of clothing for hunting and some great rain wear by Columbia, Calcutta and Bimini Bay.which are a great value BTW! With Hunting season here for Deer and Duck hunting on the way, they have you covered with a great selection of decoys, shells, and gearincluding a pretty good selection of game calls too. Dont forget the Dove Season on the wayFSS has the best selection of Dove loads in stock.at good value too. FSS is also the areas Motor Guide and Minnkota Trolling motor service center and now have 2 trained guys to help get you back to fishing as soon as possible. With Christmas on the way FSS can get your hard to get for sportsman a gift that they will like..or a gift certificate to have them shop!!! For those in a hurry, thats the easy button!!

The upcoming holiday is looking good for the fishing.I have a few days left to book in the remaining days ahead till January 1..then its off till March 1st. I will make your trip a good one.all you have to do is book it.

Well I had a great time at the beach this past week and here goes a shameless plugVisit the Drake site.Killer site!!! www.drakemag.com  Check out the fishing videos and visit the Forum.  I had the pleasure of fishing and hanging around with some of the very best anglers last week from all over the county in a beach house!!! It was just like the show Guide House.without all the drama! Hhhaaa .  All guys scored albacore on flys in fact thats all that was used that week. Special thanks to Seth Thompson, Kary Via, Harry, RA, Tom, and my very good friend Van.whos cooking was kick butt!!!

The river has taken off here and the fishing has been very solid!!! Trout, Stripers and some puppy drum are from New Bern down to Turnigan bay in all the creeks.that about says it all. Outside of some front moving in and and weather temp drops, the fishing should stay very good for a while. Baits that are workingMirror lures #17 and #19s in various colors and the #52s also. Some action on topwaters using the #7ms too. Plastics include Jerk baits, Curly tails and Gulps. Im still having solid success using the Old Bayside Shadlins in Pearl and just spiking the tipsand soaking in  shrimp Lunker sauce too is working. If the wind is calm, start using the lightest weight you can then work to the 1/4oz jig heads. A live offering of what ever will get noticed.and killed by some fish so you can use the shrimp or large minnows if the water aint to salty to use minnows. Its time to go catch some fish!!!!!

And I have 2 openings left for this month on the weekends.

Fred

11/05/07

November and the year is nearly to the end..it may go down as the Year that was off!! By at least a month or so anyway!! What usually takes place in October is just starting to happen here in the river. With the temps moving downward in the river the baitfish are starting to leave and head..to where ever bait goes, down river Id guess since I really dont know but thats at least where I see it moving anyway. And with bait moving outthe fish get a bit more desperate to eat while there is still abundant forage. Now is a good time to be an Angler and not so much a baitfish or shrimpy kinda thingy!!

The Stripers are pretty aggressive where ya find them now. From the pipe discharge @ Weyerhaeuser, stumpages off Hatteras and the Gut and back up to the Thourafare way to the NR Trestle to the Car Bridge and further down. There are a few stripers working up the Trent this year that may be the river to fish later in the seasonit sure was two years ago anyway time will tell and Ill keep some reports going in January and Feb. You have a better than average chance to hook up the next weeks ahead. Good bait choices..This time of year artificials like 1/4oz jigheads on Old Bayside 5" Shadlins in Pearl with the tails spiked green is a great starting bait and 3/8oz Traps in chrome with black and blue backs are the go to baits I first use then Ill start others.like Rattlin Rouge (I like a orange belly one) broke back Rebel in Chrome with blue back ( Ill get a bit of orange model paint and add some orange to the belly) and most any kind of topwater floating lure will work in 3 to 6 of water with the best bite early morning to late afternoon. And topwaters will work whenever you happen to find fish working on top busting bait.

Trout are here in the river and are starting to stage up in the creeks. So far the creeks down from New Bern like Beards on down have had better catches of fish.but that can change tomorrow cause fish have tails and move. Some fish in and around Dawson, Slocum, Hancock, South river and the ICW held fish and had some fish taken out. Seems like now a good placed bait will work on these fish.and a live shrimpo will win almost every time!!! This time of year is a great time of year to hang a shrimp off a cork. More on that later. The puppy drum are still abundant but have moved from all the wrong places they were to the areas youd expect them to be. Flounder have moved back from New Bern to Goose creek and further down and they are being caught on Live bait and soft plastics and Gulp Shrimp in molting and new penny (and trout, stripers and puppy drum are also going for the gulp). Shallower water seems to be where they are being taken though. Find some finger mullet working the banks and thats a good place to start fishing for any of these fish now. I like to work just ahead of the bait as its moving and cast ahead and let the bait work past my lure and just twitch it a bit to see if there are any followers.sometimes that really pays offmore often not, though but its worth it to try when the bait passes by you on the shore.

Cork fishing..here is how I fish live shrimp for trout and others. Simple rig here: a Styrofoam popping cork (I use the ones that have a cupped face, are slited with the pin  and have the weight inside them), a splitshot (about as big as afresh green pea) and a #4 live bait hook and I like the Gamagotzu (sp?) with the cut hook point. The only other option is to use a #4 Treble if the fish are going to the cooler and a bit larger fishI get good hook-ups on both hooks but Ive lost less fish with the trebles close to the boat but the trebles are tuff on small fish that you may want to cull so I usually just clip a single hook before I just kill the fish ripping the hook out and the hook is small so.I hope they live to breed or get caught again later. So, tie on what ever choice of hook..trim the knot (I use a knot that has some loop so the hook can swing freely) and place the splitshot just about 6" above the hook. Place the cork at what ever distance above the shot and use the plastic pin to secure the line in the slot so the cork doesnt slide on the line.thats usally about a rig that will hang just a bit shy of 4ft off the tip of the rod. Cast this to the shore and DRUDGE the cork under the water so the cork travels about 2 to 3ft under water..this required a pretty good stroke and let rest for at least 30 seconds. Slowly reel in till ou have moved the cork 10ft out of the area just worked and drudge it agin and wait.If there is a fish in the area it will come and kill that shrimp..you may even see the shrimp come to the surface and flip around the cork.when this happens..its gona happen! You can also of course drag a shrimp behind the boat on a bobber. Just set you depth to about a ft less than the depth you are fishing to keep some of the bottom peckers off the bait.

Hope this helps and if you need some help with thisbe glad to get you on the water for a charter to show you!! I have openings this month and will be fishing here and at the beachI like to have some clients on the boat fishing when it all happens!!!

Take care till next week.

10/31/07

The past weekend was a bit of a bust for me at least there in the Albacore Tournament held on Saturday but the Speckrigg Team covered 70miles and didnt see one!!! Hhhhaa!

Here in the river the Stripers were off to with the SW then the NE wind moving a bunch of water around. The smaller creeks off the Neuse reportedly did better than the main river this past weekend. It Was Tuck-up-in-the-creek time for sure!

Decent reports as of now after the blow with some nice sized Trout from a bit down from New Bern to the areas as far down as Oriental on both sides of the Neuse. Still a bunch of Shrimp in the backwater areas of the creeks from Slocum to Orchard and netting a few and dropping it down under a cork is a great way to prospect for some fish.

November is here and some of the better fishing may be just ahead. Although October has had some great days and nice catches, it lacked some cooler temps to make the fish transition.I think that will change with the cooler temps this week. It only has to get in the low 60s to really turn on the fish before winter sets.

I have some openings that Id really like to fill and if the weather still is great in December, Ill book then too. Either in the river or Albacore and Trout in the Ocean, give me a call to book your trip. All ocean trips are all day trips.

Im working on a report with some details on rigging for live shrimp and have that up next week.

10/22/07

After the big blow the fishing is off this weekend past here on the river. The bait is a bit mixed up to. Still some big pogys around and the smaller ones are still in the riverjust moving down now to the areas like Beards and the other creeks closer to Minnisott and further down too.  Ive been down to the beach fishing and havent had a day that is worth bragging about but still finding some fish. The albacore are there and it should be crazy when they decide to get crazy.all the stuff there is waiting, food is abundant just water temps are warm for this time of yearanyway, fish have tails and can move. Standing by on those guys. I have the pleasure of looking forward to fishing with a good buddy for the Albacore tournament this weekend and will have the luxury of having a best bud come here to fish the second week of Novgood times!!!!  Maybe I can get a charter in there somewhere.bills have to be paid!!!

The Trent may be the striper water this year.well see but a good amount of bait is still thereand stripers need to eat!! Water is still warm here in the 70s. We caught a Lizard fish last week by the car bridge..thats a saltwater guy in a freshwater area for sure. Not much news on the trout up this waysome caught but I havent heard to much about it as I write. ..still some decent bait in the creeks though so if that bait stays the fish will come.

With Hunting here now, check out Field and Stream sports for a great selection of hunting apparel and or course leisure clothing also. They have a good selection of all Gulp Baits and some Old Bayside plastics just like I use on all my chartersand they really work for me.

10/15/07

Still a bit warm for sure but a little cool front in on the way and the temps are nice too. This time of year the fishing should be getting hot but the temps are still like early summer. The salinity is still pretty high and that wont chance till we get some rain in at least the vicinity of 2 inches. Just like last report the stripers  are in the same locations but I also know of a good number that have shown up down river about 10miles late in the evenings and took some topwatersits a hoot. Still puppie drum in locations that are a bit out of the normallike up the Trent and up the neuse by the paper plantThe guys bass fishing are catching the darn thingsthat has to be a let down to see a big ol goldfish when ya are hoping its a 5lb bass that just hit your popper!!The specks have shown up from Broad to Beards creek and of course Dawson has a few both up and out along the river shore..A few reported in Hancock and Slocum but not a good showing on nice sized ones. Plastics in pearl, white, green pepper flake and chartuce have been working as well as a well placed live shrimp under the cork. This time of year I really like to fish shrimp under the corks just like a popping cork fishing the banks and points. It usually only take one good drudge under the water to let me know if there is any fish there with a shrimp and then I move on. Up the ICW has a few fish too. . There were a few nice sized fish up in Turnigan but they are moving around.ya got to findem so move if you dont get a few takers.

10/8/07

Fishing in the river is quite good this past week and the fishing for the usal species will get some better as the temps drop a bitstill pretty warm for this time of the month. The salinity is still somewhat abnormal for the areas close to New Bern and the species that usally hang a bit further down stream have found new digs here in the river from Downtown NB to almost the paper plant there at the Streets ferry bridge. Not sure what this will do long term to the riverhaving that much salt water will kill some of the freshwater clams and maybe some of the grasses too.I guess time will tell on that. But, still some decent striper action around structure (bridges, RR trestles, stumpages) from the Gap down to Duck creek and parts of the Trent too. There is still a bunch of bait up the trent..which is a good sign for the fallwait this is the falla good sign for the winter I mean to have some decent striper action!!! The puppy drum are where ya find themand they can be found from the upriver area above the gap down past turnigan.with good numbers in lots of the areasweve been finding some good sized slots fish while striper fishing..on topwaters too! The specks are also where ya find them but I wish I could say the numbers were up on those. I think some netting has gotten somebut there is still a good number of fish in the river. Top water lures, soft plastics and even some spinner biats with plastic trailers are taking all three species. There are some very decent flyfishing opportunities also. Intermed lines and Big Eyes and clowsers are working pretty goo.even a few on topwater poppers. There is a good choice of those flies in Field and Stream sports here in New Bern sold as Locals Only flies. Ties by guys here locally and its the ones we use too.

9/18/07

Just getting back from Key Largo.great place to be!!!!

Looks like the fall fishing began with a good spattering of Specks up around the bridge last weekif you heard about it, you may have missed it!! They do the Hodini where they are there for a few days following the bait then move back out a bit but they are usally in the river this time of year and with the salinity up quite a bit.I heard a report of a stray speck caught up Brices Creek!!! Ya never know till ya go!!!

Stripers along the the drop-offs above New Bern just down from the Hatteras plant and if you mark some bait.fish-it. They will move to some of the traditional areas this time of year so its worth a drive-by to hit all the usall hot spots that you have always picked up fish. Along with some of the stripers are a few Puppie Drum.like I said the salinity is still pretty high in the river near New Bern. Just down from New Bern the bite on the Southern side of the river was goodSpeck, Puppie drum and even a few stripers down from Johnson PT. Upper Broad to Goose creek has had a few fish along the stumpages there on the mouths of the creeks and further down, Hancock, Slocum had some Trout and Puppie Drum and a few Flounder too. From Minnisott down..solid angling oppertunites for yas!!! Plastics are working and I like the Old Bayside Shadlins and Mudminno with a 1/4oz jig head and work the shadlin like a shrimpget the twitch! Ive been using the pearl and charturce and add a spiked orange or green tail.depends on the day I guess on that. Hard baits.Zarra spooks pup sized for all the fish and also the Mirrow lures like the 52s and the 19s and 17s are working equally. Yo-zuris  floating christal minnows worked just under the surface and twitched on top area a good choice in the shallow to 4 water too. Its also a good time to try some flyfishing!!!!! Get geared up at Field and Stream Sports here in New Bern. They all your fishing need covered.

This is the last weekend before the Neuse River Backwater Open Tournament. The link to the site is on my home page at the top. If the weather is good the tournout should be pretty good. Last year there were some 39 boats that fished..Lots of tournament entries have been picked up from the stores and looks like a lot of guys are at least thinking about fishing it this year. There are a few that wont fish this year due to the moving the tournament to Sunday and the staff appoligize for that.well try to get the time reserved for next year so that will not happen again. But.looks like that are some good fish this year so we are looking to have some great weigh ins!!!

Well see you on the water!!!!

9/04/07

Fishing has really picked up in the river and the fall fishing is on the edge of of race'n to a pace all will like on catching fish. The flounder bite has picked up nicly and the Specks are moving up the river and are just before turning the corner @ minnisott. Most of the fish are still in the Lower Broad Creek to Minnisott areas but this will most likly change in the next weeks. Here in New Bern the fishng was decent with some reports of over slot Puppie Drum close to New Bern and some under slot too..and a few small flounder. These were caught on plastics and cut bait. The small Stripers still cont to make apperences and are int he 12 to 13" range...lot of fun but a note of caution fellas and gals, if you are targeting these fish, please use some caution to release these fish (and others like the small Puppie drum) unharmed. One good way to do this is to Mash down the barbs on your hooks and to use a de-hooker to help these fish not be handled so much reducing some of the stress of beign caught...it's a resorce placed there for us to enjoy, lets help them make it to the next size up to keep a few if we want!

Most of the creeks just down from New Bern and the Stumpages are starting to hold a varity of fish and live biat is working on these . Live shrimp is a great choice and the creeks in the minnisott area have some shrimp that you can catch in a cast net...Work of caution, if you throw a net inside the inland line, you are in need of a special devices liscence to do that. The ticket is not work the shrimp my friend. I like to use shrimp on popping corks and the rig is simply a #4 treble with a split shot 6" above that. Ajust the cork to the depth of the bottom and dragging behind the boat will lift that up a foot or so. If you are casting and working the cork to the shore, set the depth a bit less than the bottom, this will help keep the pinfish and other critters off your baits. You can also replace the live biat with a soft plastic of your choice...I like the the Old Bayside Shrimp or the Shadlins..they have been working pretty good for us.

Stop by Field and Stream Sports today to get some of what you need..they have most of what you need to get out in the outdoors!!!!

The Neuse River Backwater Open is just a month away and we already have close to 2000.00 in prizes...not including the cash prizes. Last year we had 39 boats fish the tournament and thhis year we hope to keep it going that good at least.  We currently have a few guys without a boat that want to fish so if you are looking for a partner to fish with drop me a line and we'll see if we can match a few of you up!!!

Stay tuned for more on the tournament..and the link is on my home page @ the top!

8/30/07

Been having some nice trips the past 2 weeks with small specks. Some keeper stripers (but mostly little guys) and some puppy drum and small flounder(I have not found very many keepers this year so far) from an area from the Car bridge to Beards Creek and mostly on the northern side of the river with the exception of a few places on the southern side of the river near New Bern. Reports of flounder, Puppy drum all the way to Glenburnie this week would suggest the salinity of the water to be a bit high.and that has some impact long term for the river..  If the salt water reaches a level that will begin to kill some of the fresh water mussels and some of the vegetation, it can lead to some of the freshwater fish moving up the river to find some of their food and habitat.  Some rain in the system would be pretty goodjust not a flood to screw-up the really nice bait and fishing that is resulting from the higher salinity levels near New Bern now.I caught a Lizard Fish over the weekend for petes sake.thats salty!

For the report.

Not a bad showing for the little stripers still and a few keepers in the mix with the larger ones in the river along the RR trestle and up river from Glenburnie along some of the drop-offs and ledges..with a few reported near Wheyrhouser. Close to New Bern the fishing is better since the weather has backed off that hot spell we had and some trout were caught just off the bridge las week and early on this week. Shrimp were scattered along the shore in the area toocrazy. Further down the river from NW creek, Broad, Goose and other out to Minnisott have all species of fish and they will take live bait and some plastics and mirrorlures..I have been using some of the Old Bayside Shadlins in Mullet and Pearl colors are working best for me and I of course sweeten them with some Lunker Sauce in Shrimp flavor..and may spike it in green tailor orangeField and stream sports here in New Bern have them in the colors I use and all the other stuff too.  The big Drum bit is ON!!!!!!! I have just a few opportunities left to book..and just a few of the weekend days are left for October as its rumored to be one of the better fall seasons in a whileand last year was really good!! I have Nov 3rd and the 10th open for now. And there may open up a few dates in Octoberjust get your name on the book to gocall me or e-mail me to shore it up.

Stop by field and stream sports for all the Fall stuff you need to either hit the water or the woods!!! Dove decoys, shells, Deer hunting supplies and is your Camo getting place!!

8/16/07

WELL THE FALL FISHING IS UPON US IN A FEW WEEKS AND THE FISHING SHOULD BE GETTING A LOT BETTER IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE!!! wE ARE CATCHING SOME OF ALL SPECIES NOW ON BOTH LIVE AND ARTIFICAL BAIT. LOTS OF PUPPYDRUM IN THE ICW AND IN THE CREEKS ALONG THE NEUSE RIVER. SOME SPECKS ARE BEGINNING TO WORK A BIT CLOSER TO THE CREEKS FROM THE SOUND AS WE HAVE CAUGHT SOME IN THE RIVER. I WILL BE RUNNING SOME TRIPS FROM MORHEAD IN THE NEXT WEEKS BUT I'LL BE MOVING MORE TO THE RIVER TO GET ON THE TROUT AND STRIPERS.

THE NRBWO TOURNAMENT WILL BE ON SEPTEMBER 29TH THIS YEAR....LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT TOURNAMENT AGAIN THIS YEAR.

From New Bern down river. Still some decent lilstriper action around the carbridge and along the shore there are a few below and in the slot puppy drum. I'm catching them on Old Bayside Shadlin in Mullet on a 1/4oz red head with a bit of Lunker sauce in Menhaden flav. Just keep you baits in the same size as the live bait you see and that works ok. You can also buy some live shrimp and float them under a popping cork to get a lot of action with the puppydruma nd stripers too. There are some fish working teh shoreline around the mouth of Broad and Goose creek and along the southers side creeks beabove Minnisott beach. There are some Flounder in Minnisott around the ferry basin and along the shorline there and just off dawson creek too. Not a bunch but there are some. Hear d of one in the 26" size caught close to Minnisott. The Guides fishing out of Orential area doing well with mixed bag trips in the open waters of the Neuse and they are starting to do pretty good witht eh Old Drum too. Speaking of Old Drum Charters, I will only do a select few this year. Some have alrealy called to secure a spot. If you plan to fish with me you would be good to let me know...but call the guides listed here on this site. They are the best at this game!!!

Dove Hunting is just a few weeks off and Field And Stream Sports has all you need covered for that. Decoys, Shells, light weight camo and seats...it's all there. And you can get a new shotgun there too. Field and Stram sports...the biggest little sports store in New Bern!!!! Stop by and see what they are getting in new!!! They have Gulp Alive, Old Bayside Plastics, and all the baits that will keep your cooler smelling like fish!!!hhhaaaa

Long over due report:

The fishing has been so-so and in a typical summer pattern here in the New Bern area with some days better than most for the Stripers, Pups and Specks.or simply put some days have been better than others! So here is what was happing this past week on the Neuse. Above New Bern to Cow Pen there were a few decent sized Catfish in the teens caught from the bank and boat. A good bite on bream still is going on and Crickets, worms and small artificial are working there. An the artificial baits, Beetle spins, little Rebels seem to be a good choice for that. The silver Beetle spins with the 1/16oz head wok good in the shallow water and the 1/8oz seem better in the deeper water. White and green seem to be the best colors. Flyrodders and lilpoppers are having some fun too. Still a few Stripers in the area just above New Bern close to the Hatteras Plant. Topwater spooks early in the morning and real late seem the best time. Field and Stream sports has the color and style covered.just ask! Around the car bridge and RR trestle, thee are some fish too and a bunch of small guyslittle stripers in the 12" class were caught this past weekend around the car bridge. I had a friend Gary D. call me yesterday (sorry Gary, I just got your message today when I turned the cell on) that he had got a great bite on some Catfish in the river close to New Bern fishing with the small pogeys here in the river as bait. A few puppy drum in the stumpages close to New Bern. Now is a good time to try a popping cork for these fish. It will let you suspend over the stumps and not get hung-up in the stumpsas bad??? Stop by and try a few from Field and Stream Sports here in New Bern, they have all the types youll need. There have been some small specks in the riverjust spotty this time of year. Better down river though and in the sound. Still using the Old Bayside Shadlins in 4" white and mullet colors to catch most of the fish. I might add a bit of spike-it to color the tail and add a bit of Lunker Sauce to spice it up for the slow bite..it works!! There were a few small shrimp in the creeks this weekend. Some of the creeks were still a bit off color from the last big rains we had but the river is pretty nice. There is some likely hood of a fish kill in the future with the heat and low winds of latethere were a few dead pogeys at the ramp there in New Bern over the weekend. Still a bunch of bait in the river..thats a good thing!!!! Some really big Pogeys tooking Mac sized pogeys.

Been at the beach with the Sharks.we got the boats best ever this past Saturday..better than a 7ft blacktip followed by one just under 7ft.in 3ft of waterit was something to see!!! Seems to be plenty of Puppy Drum in the ICWand off the ICW too.

Stop by Field and Stream Sports here in New Bern to see all the new baits and Rod Combos they have in stock. They also have a great selecting of fresh and Saltwater Flyfishing flies that will get you hooked up and going. They carry Temple Fork and others too. Locals Only Saltwater Flies have been selling very nicely..ya gotta like having the local boys sharing!!!

7/16/07

Reports of some Tarpon is most likely the news most are waiting to hear about. The Guides here on the river are starting to see some. Ive been out of the loop to know if any have been landed though. However you can check out the guides page on site to links to Down East Guide and Speckfever Guide and a few others to see.

Here in the river there have been some Stripers early and late around the bridge, tressle, and shores with some stumpage near deep water. They have been taken on Topwater, jigs and even spinnerbiats. Old Bayside Shadlins in Pearl with a 1/4oz jig head with the tail spiked green is doing a great job here in the river for the stripers. Some puppy drum in the river too. With the fresh water from the past weeks rains, most of the fish may be driven out to the main river at the creek mouths as they follow the baitfish. There is some water that is pretty void of Oxygen in the center of the river.hopefully this will not end up getting blowed up the shoreline and result in a fish kill. There is a good number of flounder in the river now and most are being taken on live bait. While Im not an avid flounder fisher, I seem to have better luck fishing the minnow on a jig head rather than just a flounder rig, but either is effective.  Further down river the Specks are larger than the ones here close to New Bern. Early morning topwater bite then some live or cut bait will work as the sun rises a bit. Reports from the sound have been decent for the summer. It wont be long before the Old Drum show up here on the river.

I will be making some limited trips for the drum. If you would like to be on a calling list to fish for these drum, email me or call me. I will start fishing when the fish are there thick. And I will take names on the list on a first contact basis. You can also book and Ill try to make the date in the top time frame. Limited to 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children per trip. Remember this is a closed take fishery.

And until they leave, there is a great fun fishery in the ocean nearshore for sharkslots of pullage!!! Call and get your trip.

7/2/07

Water in the river is pretty nice this past week and the fishing has been so-so with the hotter temps here in the river close to New Bern. Still a decent bite in the morning and late afternoon. The moon had a play in some of the weaker bites this past week but the afternoon bite was still pretty good. Above Hatteras Yachts, the stripers were somewhat inconsistent on topwater but there were some times that still had a lot of excitement. Just off from Glenburnie Park there were some fish caught. Traps, Spooks, and jigs caught most of the fish….There were a bunch of Gars around the Train Trestle and just off the Car bridge too….and for most parts they area in a lot of areas and easy to catch. They do add a tug when other fish are not biting so give them a try..they a bunch of fun! Just down from New Bern the fishing is a bit more consistent but still the early and late bits are better. Reports of some Flatfish in the crab pots mean they are moving to the shallows and a few were caught this weekend in Broad and Goose in the shallow stumpages areas. Live pogey and mullet on split-shot rigs are working as are adding a float to the same rig and float ing them over the same areas…sometimes this help not getting hung up as much. Also some were caught on spinnerbaits and jigs too. There are some puppy drum and small specks in the river and you may catch a striper in the same hole….Soft plastics and live bait are working….Old Bayside plastics in Pearl, Mullet are Favorite colors this time and area…they have them @ Field and Stream Sports here in New Bern. I fish them on a 1/4oz head. I like to fish plastics with a bunch of action this time of year and will try all cadence till I find what they like….somtimes it works to just rip it in fast with just a steady retreve….just try all!! I really like to use the Pins Minnow by Yo-Zuri with a green back that sinks….Further down river the fish are a bit larger!!!! Capt Gary Dubiel of Speckfever Charters has been getting his clients on solid charters of Slot, over slot sized puppie Drum and very nice sized Specks…Gary along with the other Guides that are listed on my Guides page that are fishing in the sound have been reporting great catching of Specks and Puppie Drum. With the coming of the Tarpon and Old Drum now would be the time to see if those guys have any openings….As I’ve said….I don’t do Tarpon….but I now a few that are the best in the area that can…. I will be doing a few Drum Trips this year…call or email if you want to be put on the waiting list to go.

Doing some trips to the beach for sharks and such….lots of fun!!!!!

Lets go!

Hope most had a happy fathers day!!! I did for sure.

The bream are still taking all forms of anglingfrom small poppers on the fly to crickets and worms. Target the shorelines with some cypress trees that have some depth around them and some of the marsh banks along the river that are just a bit deep at the edge of the marsh.but the better fishing is best on the trees. There are some really big Gar in the river now. They take live bait best or dead bait also. Great tugs!!!! Fish for them where ever you see them broaching and set up with a bobber with a small treble and a splitshot about 6" above it. Set the cork just deep enough to cast it well..mostly 2 will do. When the Gar takes the bait, it grabs it with its bill tip and swims off and works the bait down to his mouth.that usually takes about 10 seconds so let him swim off with the bait and count to 10, reel down to take the slack out and set the hook with a firm tugthen hang on. Small and large stripers are in the river around the bridge and along the shoreline on the north side of the river. Lots of bait in the river now so look for the fish to stage up on any points that they can ambush on. Small Puppy Drum and Smallish Specks are pretty abundant in the river now and lots of fun. Most of these will take the Old Bayside Shadlins in Pearl or Mullet fished on 1/4oz jig heads. You can fish the shallower waters with these baits on Popping corks. I prefer the Old Bayside paradise popper with the titanium wire..its indestructible.  Use as much leader between the popper and the bait as you can cast. You can also use some live bait that is there too. Mush better sized fish in the larger part of the river. Capt Gary Dubiel has been getting his clients on some slot, over the slot Puppy Drum and very nice sized Specks and a few of those were citations. He still has a few openings he told megive him a call or others on the site heres guide page!! See you later.

6/10/07

Very good fishing here on the neuse so far this week.and with a stable weather pattern, Im looking forward to more good fishing this weekend

Up above New bern, catches of nice bream, stripers and a few large catfish   The stripers were a early and late bite..but the great thing was they took some topwater plugs....gotta love that!!! For the bream..flyrod and small poppers and ultralight spinning with the beetle spins and curlytail grubs worked in the trees along the shoreline of the Neuse and trent rivers.

From New bern to minnisott

Stripers in the piles and stumpage and even along the deeper shorelines on the northern side of the river.mostly an early morning and late evening bite and were taking softplastics stick baits and some topwaters too. Puppie drum in the below the slot size for the most part but there seems to be a good number of them and they put up a scrappy tug n light tackle. They will also take a clowser on the fly too. There are some good numbers of Speckled trout but most in the river near New Bern are young fish with a few keepers in the mix. Small Yozuris, soft plastics work here  And a few flounder have shown up getting caught while fishing for the trout and Puppie drum.  The creeks down river from New Bern 10 miles have had the best numbers of puppie drum and specks

From Minnistott to the sound

Very decent catches of slot Puppie drum, Keeper sized specks, some large ones too. And keeper flounder were all reported caught this week. Some of the favored areas were the mashes and creeks mouths along the mouth of the Neuse and others that empty into the sound. Marshes in the southern side of the sound have had better reports of Trout. Live bait or cut bait will work on the Puppie drum and flounder and Small Stickbaits, jerk style soft plastics have worked for all the species there in the sound.

Looks like a great week of fishing comeing up again for the area!

6/4/07

Fishing in the river is pretty good now and a good mix of species can be caught on all forms of tackle!! The upper Neuse has a good population of bluegills that will readily take small baits either artificial or live and they are a nice break from the open water fishing when the wind drives ya back in. Begin in the stumpage of the big trees along the Neuse where the deeper waters are close to the band. But having said that there are a few good shallow banks up- past Hatteras yachts that are more of a sandy flat that hold some decent populations too of Bream and a few bass that will no doubt take the little fly poppers..lots of fun there. Further down from Hatteras the Stripers are doing pretty consistent and most anglers are having shots on topwaters and sub-surface baits and soft plastics. Preferred baits are Spooks worked nice and fast and Rebel style stick baits. Soft plastics include the Old Bayside Shadlin in 5" and colors in the natural or white work well on a 1/4oz jig head if the wind and waves allow that. Crank baits include the Rattle Traps ripped along at a pretty good pace. Puppie drum and Speckled trout are in the river from NW creek on down and most are the little summer trout and  the Puppie drum may be from 10" to 20" with more in the 14" range but still a lot of fun and the little guys have decent game when it comes to pullage. We are finding this time of year the speed of retrieve varying from day to day.even from spot to spot so if one speed of retrieve isnt working try to mix it up till you find one they want. Nicer fish in the sound on both species. Fellow Guide Gary Dubiel of Speckfever Guide service found a pod of really big old drum this past weekend and took a few on very light tackle!!!

I have some open dates on the weekends here on the Neuse!!!! And some afternoons also for the stripers. Im also offering trips to the coast out of Beaufort for Nearshore, inside and backwater tripsall in the same day.its doable to take Spanish, Sharks and Puppie Drum all in the same day.Summertime NC fishing!!!  Lets go!!

5/24/07

Report for the river. On the river up from New Bern the panfish  are biting well! In the trees along the banks and on some of the sandy flats that are on the river the Bream and Shellcrackers are taking live bait and artificial too. It’s a lot of fun to catch these on the same ultra-lights that you use for the shad in spring. Beatle spins and the micro-lites from Rebel and Matsue work very well and the small floater crank baits with lips very seldom get hung-up on the bottom….in the trees is another matter hhhaaaaaaa. I’m not much of a Bass guy but there seems to be a good number of them too. The Rock (Striper) are playing nice this past week here in the river and we did OK on them…but any afternoon where you get a dozen total (with some of the little fellas mixed in) is a good time on the river! I didn’t get a look on topwater yesterday but things went well with the flyrod again and soft plastics in light colors also took a few. I thought the shorter versions of plastics did some better than the longer ones. Old Baysides Shadlins (which are in Field and Stream Sports her in New Bern) again work for me on a 1/4oz jig head. In the area of the Northwest and the rest of the creeks just down from New Bern the small puppie drum are not thick but you should be able to catch them and have some fun….they are fun!!  You may find a few Specks mixed in there too. Small paddle tails plastics or the Beatle spins in1/8oz work very well and don’t get caught up in the stumpage as bad…Stumpage is the clue here. And a few Rock may at times be mixed in here to. Further down river the Specks are a bit thicker and have pulled out to the mouths and points of the creeks…the little guys will stay in the creeks while the larger breeding size will may their way to the river and head to the more open waters in the sound to make more Specks….It’s hard to throw back a big ole fat speck but just think of how may good quality eggs she’ll have to give…and, if you do plan to release a few fish don’t net them just release them boat side in the water. Back on subject. Topwater bite for the Specks is good now and will be OK until the sun gets high and the water temps ramp up. Yo-zuri Pins Minnow in Chartruce and the Mirror Lures #17 there in the sound work well and Soft plastics in the lightest Jig head the wind will allow you to use is the best bet. Shoreline with a cut bank will yield both puppie drum and Specks and both will take a piece of fresh cut pinfish on a small Owen Luptin rig. All the creeks down from Oriental have bait and that’s a good sign. The weather looks decent (for now anyway) so let’s go !!!!

5/17/07

Quick report on the rockfish. Got a few in the last week on Topwaters here on the Neuse by New Bern. Big spooks got some attention and got a few on Poppers with the flyrod!! It wasan't on fire but even warm fishing on topwater is HOT to me!!!!!

5/14/07

Starting up river just a bit….the smaller panfish were starting to hit better. A few reports near Weyerhaeuser (sp?)and further up river of good Bream fishing as the fish are in the spawning stages and bedding up. My friend Buddy also did great on them in Pamlico so it seems to be all over good time to fish for these fun fish. Live bait and small artificial are working. I like using the small beetle spins with a small white or yellow curly tail. Last week there were a few decent sized Rock caught in the river. A few up near Hatteras and a few more around the Car Bridge and reef….and a few still off the points near upper Broad and Live Oak. A few were taken on Topwaters and a few were taken on a few other varieties of baits. A few were taken on spinner baits like the redfish magic’s!  A number of Flounder of the smallish size in upper broad and North West creek and a better class of fish from Minnisott down river in all the creeks on both north and south sides of the river. Plastics and finger mullets for these fish.  A few Puppie drum in several different size classes have shown up here on the river with more down river than up river…for now anyway. A few friends have started to do okay on some speckled trout and that’s some welcome news too!!!!

Out on the river this week for stripers…..I’ll report as I get to’em

Field and Stream Sports have the Old Bayside Plastics that I use when fishing on the river and beach!! Stop by and pick up one bag and try them…..Let me know how they work!!!

5/7/07

More of a wrap-up than a report but here goes.

Up there in Weldon the past week for the Stripers and here is the results.

Sunday late afternoon. 9 Stripers on the Fly with one that was 26"

Monday   47

Tuesday  1 fish on fly in the morning and didnt fish the afternoon

Wed     41

Thursday   afternoon 21

Friday   49

Saturday 62

Sunday 20

It was not the really hot fishing that most hear about and go there to get on but still the fishing was pretty good by most standards of fishing. Most of the fish were taken on live bait for the week. We did have some pretty good luck using the OldBayside Shadlins in Pearl  5" with a 1/4oz green head and Spiked half of the body in charturce. We also took a good amount on Fly too.

After the weather calms down a lot the fishing should pick up here in the river!! There is some nice bait in the lower part of the river so I hope the warmer temps will help move some of that into the river up here. The stripers were just starting to make a show in the places they seem to hang in the summertime but Its a guess as to where theyd be with all this wind. The Puppie Drum had made a better showing last week in some of the creeks on the South end of the river by Cherry Branch and some small pups in the creeks down from Oriental. There were reports of a few decent sized Trout in upper Broad and Goose but with the wind and rain this week.anyway its really time for these fish to make way to the open water soon.and the sooner the better!! Tactics that work best for this time of year are small stick baits like Pins Minnows by Yo-Zuri and the #19 from Mirrowlure. I like the Charturuce on both or one of them with some orange on the belly works in the creeks further down river too on overcast days. Old Bayside Shadlins in Pearl 4" on a light jig head will also be a great choice to try. Live bait choices would be live finger mullet under a popping cork with a circle hook and split shot.

Anyway,

I have open days on the calendar to go fishing!!!! Even a few weekends are open!

4/28/07

Fished a lot last week and this week will find me up there in Weldon for a week. Looks good and lots of stripers on the way there so looking forward to that...it's fun no doubt!

I covered the entire river and all the creeks last week from New Bern to Turnigan bay. There were some fish at all places but it sure seems a bit behind the usall....at least for me. There were some very decent reports of trout sent in to me last week by some of the local guys that had them pinned down and even a few larger fish in the mix. For some reason the lower part of the river had some fish but just were funky and would not hit. We found them laying in the shallow water in grass beds and the fish would follow a bit and either turn away or just kinda slash at the baits. We tried all stuff!!! But we did manage to put fish in the coolers those days. Upper Neuse had some decent troutage and even a few pups the ran in the 15" class and the trout were from...and I kid you not, 6" that hit a 3"shadlin to 16" with more smaller ones. It will get better. The fish were still a ways up the creeks....at least in the upper part of the river. Usally they are well out to the mouths of the creeks this time of year. Water temps are okay but I didn't see that much bait untill the lower end of the river like in Turnigan and there is a lot of bait there.

There should be a good mornig and afternoon striper bite coming with the moon going past full next week...

4/19/07

Well that was quite a big ol blow we had for about three day !!!! it also dumped about 3 inches of water in the river. It should be cleaning up a bit by weekend though and with some calm winds the bottom should start to settle out and the fishing should pick up too. The fresh water usually will back the fish like the trout and puppy drum out to areas where the salinity is a bit better. So Ill be looking for fish  on the up creek points of the river. Also the water will be better quality a bit further down river too. The southern side of the Neuse doesnt drain as much low ground as the northern side does so the southern side of the Neuse tend to clean up a bit faster if the wind lays out..thats the best scenarioor Ill usually just start picking points near some good water areas that usually dont get effected by all of this  by going up the ICW a ways. As you go picking your way down river dont forget that sometimes a color change in baits may be all it takes so try different colors and styles of Plastics and hard plastics. Bait will be on the smaller size this time of year so try to keep you bait choices in the same ballpark. But having said that as a normal thingI always try a larger bait if I get no luck on the smaller ones. you never know till ya throw.

There were some stripers in the river From Hatteras to the AR reef just before the storms last weekthe fresh water most likely didnt effect them but it may have driven the bait to other locationsI just havent been looking for them this week. No doubt is your reading this, you are also aware of the website N.C. waterman. ( www.ncwaterman.com ) and there is usually a few good reports there also. Ill be on the river the whole week starting Saturday and follow up with a week in Weldon for the stripers..reports of that fishery is looking a bit better than last years run with cooler temps and lots of water to keep the flow up. Looking forward to that. Regarding that.I have one day open on Thursday May the 3rd in the morning if any of you care to give it a try. I also will help get you on the river with some of the other guides that work there that time of the year. Just let me know and Ill try to get you on thatits can really be a blast!!!!! Most of the Neuse River Guides are up there working that time of year. Check them out on my guides page.

4/9/07

To start off with, Brandon and I had a great time doing the Seminar there @ Field and Stream Sports here in New Bern Last Thrusday evening. And to make it really sweet, all those that attended were treated to 25% off everything in the store with the exception of Guns, and Gun and hunting Stuff.so all of the fishing stuff was on sale!!!!! Cool! And they fed all there too with some hotdogs and all the fixings!! We covered lots of ground on fishing for Trout, Puppie Drum and Stripers here in the river. And that night the owners told me that an order of Old Bayside Plastics (all the ones that I personally use) are on the way and should be there at the store soon. Ill update when they arrive in.

Now for the report.

Since last report there have little Hickory Shad caught so I dont know what the heck happened there this year..still some Whites out there, not many though. There have been some Catfish caught too in the area of the river above Wheyerhouser. Fav places are from Cow Pen to Maple Cypress and Turkey Quarter Creek and a few other little creeks just off the Neuse. While its fun to catch these big ole fish, just a reminder that they are very old fish too. Keep them in the river. Carry a camera with you fishing a ruler and measure and photograph and release the big ones to catch another day.  Keep the under 10lbers to eat!!! The big ones make lots of little fish!!!!

The Bream are just beginning to move onto their beds and will take crickets and flyrod poppers are just around the cornermy personal fav time and kind of fishing for them. Areas that are pretty good are some of the flats just down from the paper plant (Whey) and along all the Cypress in the upper river. Pitch kettle creek is pretty good also. You may want to check into getttin the cabin rented there at Pitch Kettle Outpost and spend the night. Ive done it and the cabin is real nice!!!.

There seems to be a few nice Stripers being caught in the river with the largers ones off cut bait and further up the river above Hatteras yachts. And while I havent been personally, there were a few reportedy caught around the 17 car bridge over the week prior to the weekend. Most were taken on Traps and jigs arund the piles and off stumpage.

Working further down river, there are a few trout in upper Broad and Goose creek but the better numbers have been from further down past Minnisott . A few nicer sized ones around Oriental and some up Adams too. The puppie Drum are mixed in with the trout. Both are taking Plastics, Flies and hard baits. Once we get past this dang cold spell the topwater bite should begin. Well see. Mirror lures #s 19 and 17 in natural colors and mixed with some orange and Charturce will get it done and Old Bayside Shadlins on a 1/4oz jig head works good also.

I have Wed the 2 open on the Roanoke river for Stripers in May. The rest of the days are booked. Let me know and Ill try to get you with other guides if you plan to fish that week. Its nearly time to hit it hard so take out the loan and fill the boat up!!!!!

3/22/07

Well it looks like the spring is springing and with the warmer temps the fishing should pick up as well. So..starting from Pitch Kettle and working down. Here goes.

Shad are still there and the water was dirty and a bit on the rise in the river. With the higher water the current inside the creek should also pick up a bit..thats a good thing. Colors that work there in the creek. 1/8oz lead heads with white, pink or Chartreuse body. Curly tails seem to work best on the average. I still just get white and Spike-it the color of choice. Silver Spoons and gold spoons tied on tandem rigs work just about as good as it gets but sometimes the fish will take just the single grub or spoon if the bite is on. Last week they wanted it really retrieved really fast so always try different speeds of retrieve. There were some Catfish caught in the river too. And a few larger stripers on Cut bait were in the mix too. Down to New Bern. A few Stripers in all the places (hatteras,RR trestle, and the car bridge) that hold fish most of the year. This should pick up after the main run of shad is over and these boys move back down stream. Late May usually sees a good top water bite begin late evening and very early morning so Im looking forward to that.  Down below New Bern. Ive heard of some small trout in upper Broad and goose but not to many so far. A few stripers in Upper Broad also in the stumpage areas in the creek and off the Jetty (or breakwater as I call it) of the sailing club there on Broad and the piles in goose too.April always seems a much better bet to find some puppie drum in these creeks. In the creeks further down river (Beards, Slocum, Hancock) Reports of some fish in all species right nowmixed in with each other too. No real solid word on fishing further down from that just now. This time of year I like to use the Old Bayside Shadlin in white on a 1/4oz jig head. While fishing in the upper river and when it warms a bit Ill also use the Mud Mino in Mullet color with a paddle tail. These are good bets for all fish in the lower river areas and did I forget to mention that I use Lunker Sauce on all my plastics?

Just a few days left to book on the Roanoke with me this May. Currently open are May 1st and 2nd all day and the morning of the 3rd.  For those that own their own boat but would like a veteran guide on board to fish this river, drop me a lineits very price effective.

April 5th @ 6:30 Branden Eatman and myself will be giving a free seminar @ Field and Stream Sports here in New Bern. Tips on what we use in the river and how we use it for Stripers, Trout and Puppie Drum and others species too. Its good for the novice and not so novice fisherman.or fishergirl.

See you there!!!

3/15/07

No real word on Trout with the exception of Capt. Gary Dubiel reporting that he did find some Trout and Puppie Drum this past week. Gary guides here and other destinations in NC and abroad too. Check his link off the guides page. This Sunday, Ill be at Field and Stream Sports hanging around. Ill have my fly tying stuff there and making good use of the time to tie some flies for Weldon and also here on the river. Stop By and say hello and maybe discuss fishing!!! Joey @ F&SS plans to get a pretty good selection of tying materials and hell be getting some Temple fork Flyrods in soon. And dont forget that Me and Branden Eatman  (Field and Steam Sports own Prostaffer) will be doing a Seminar on april the 5th there in the store @ 6:30pm. The staff there at F&SS will have drinks and hotdogs and hamburgers there for those attendingand its all free!!!!!It will cover Trout, Striper and Puppie Drum fishing here in the river. Stop by!!

I headed up to Weldon Sunday to fish with good friend Kary Vie for Shadit was KILLLER!!!!! Kary landed 77 and I landed 40 and they were very nice sized fish. ALL ON FLY!! While Im not doing charters up there for the shad, the striper season will be good if the Core of Eng. keeps the water level higher than last year. Each year is different Im told by the guys that have been there for a lifetime and last year was a tuff one that came in spurts. With water levels in position to be normal in flow this year the fishing should be better.much better if all holds together. Im currently booking for the week of May 1 through the 6th.  And open dates are May 1.2.3. Half or whole. Take the day off and lets go!!!

Shad fishing in the river still seems a bit off but the numbers are getting better and the fish are in the low grounds. Not much with the stripers around the car bridge but a few were taken in the Hatteras yachts area and up river on cut bait. There were a few nice cats taken on Trot lines near Turkey and pitch kettle.and a few of the 10lbers on hook and line too.

3/09/07

Quick report here. Still cool temps seem to be keeping the Hicks from going into a full blown attack mode and the river is a bit higher from the rain last week in the PK areaand pretty murky too for that matter. Last week the colors that worked for me was the white 2" curly grubs that I spiked pink tail to half the body and the other half I spiked green on a white 1/8oz jig head.and I used the Honey Hole spoons and chrome worked best for me but I caught most on the plastics. I got mine @ Field and Stream Sports.

Down river the stripers seem to be few and far between with only a few on the bridges and AR reef. More being caught up by and past the paper plant on either live minnows or cut shad. A few nicer catfish have been caught too.

It may be a bit to early to call it over but the winter sure looks like its on its last leg here in eastern NCand warmer temps will equal to nice beginnings to our Speckled trout fishery. With only a small area effected just off the ICW this year, our resident trout population should be really in good shape and most of the guides and anglers that fish here on the Neuse agree that a good season should be at hand soon!!! April 5th will find me @ Field and Stream Sports in the evening with my good friend Brandon Eatman. Well be giving a mini-semi on tactics for Specks, Bass, Stripers and a few others. It will be in the evening so you dont have to miss fishing to attend!! Hey, its gona be geared to the novice anglers and will feature some great tips and you can get a chance to do a bit of hands on rigging. Or you can stop by and just say howdy!!! Till Monday.

3/3/07

Changed font color and beginning a new season here!! He we go. Starting with...Shad!! They are here now! Let's go catch a few!! Not so much a hit and miss thing now but better numbers to come in the next weeks. Today a lot of guys caught a few dozen per boat and they were a lot of fun. The water is just right and will make getting in the Lowgrounds easy. This is fishing that a lot of fun and great to get the winter blues shacken off. I can take three anglers easy. Ultra lights and 5,6wts on the fly. Book a trip and find out why this fishing is so much fun for the family. The big catfish are there but it seems not to be on fire just yet. Just down from Pitch Kettle there are some stripers moving in. They are no dougbt following the shad and herring. There have been some very nice sized ones taken on cut biat this past week near the paper plant and some off Swift creek too. The back side of Hog Island yeillded a few also. There are still a few fish @ the RR Tresstle and the Car Bridge too.. But the larger ones will this time of year head up river.Artificals for the stripers..Traps, Rattlin Rouges and Old Bayside Shadlins 5" on a 1/4oz jighead in Silver. I like fishing the Shadlins!!! There are some Trout in the creeks and with the warmer temps they may start to feed a bit more often. That can't happen soon enough!!!

After DLST returns, I'll be doing some charters in the afternoon. Call me for a great deal on a Shad or Striper trips. If you are looking for a great trip call me about the Cabin overnight trips for Shad, Stripers and Catfish. A heck of a deal and a great value.

It isn't too early to send me and email to inquire about the Stripers trips on the Roanoke. I will be doing the usal week in the first of May when the season closes and this year I may do a few trips in the keeper season to boot. Past clients need no deposit, just their word is good for me.

Stop By Field and Stream Sports soon. It's amazing how much equipment they have for the outdoors!!! Summer clothing is arriving and they just got a new shipment of Costa Del Mar Sunglasses in. Check out the Turkey Hunting supplies too.  See you next week.

2/22/07

hey I added a link to Capt Warren Dudehefer's site on my guides page. Check it out!!!

2/19/07

Still not fishing here on the Neuse but I have had the luzxury of fishing in the Slidell La. and Hopedale La. marshes for Trout and Redfish. Let me say this.....there is a whole bunch of fish there!!!! If you ever need info to book guides there in that area, give me a e-mail and I'll put you on the better guides there in the area...it aint fishing, IT"S CATCHING!!! Really!!

I'm gettng rigged up and ready to start the 2007 season and for me that starts in March. Mostly for the Shad up river and I have some great deals on that this year.

March is going to be here soon and that means some warmer temps and some itching to hit the water and shake off the winter. March also starts off my season here on the Neuse. And I usally begin with the Hickory Shad. This year I'm trying somthing a bit different. I do have the standard trips but I'm also booking for mixed fishing trips there up near Pitch Kettle. Here's the deal::::

Arrive to fish @ 2:00pm and fish for 3 hrs for Hicks. Unload to the cabin there at Pitch Kettle Outpost and refresh and rest a bit there in the cabin or weather permiting kick back outside on the porch over looking the river. Around 7:00pm we'll head out to try for some big Catfish. A lot of them are in the 10lb class and some go much bigger. Close to 9:00pm we'll turnin there at the cabin for good sleep. The cabin is heated and has a bunk bed, two recliners and a sofa too. We'll wake and fish for 3 hours for Shad, Catfish, and we may catch some stripers. Come back to the cabin for a breakfast and pack up to hit the road back home.  Killer huh!

Package deal includes all mentioned (with the exception of food) guided fishing and all tackle for two or three. Kids are welcome and it's G-rated.  Cost: 425.00 The cabins are getting booked so let me know if you want to do this so I can book the cabin.

Hope to hear from some of you soon!!! The middle of March to first of April are prime times so book fast.

And Don't forget the Stripers on the Roanoke!!! I will be spending a week there this year. Send me a email if your are interested.

This weekend is the Spring Classic @ Bass Pro Shops in MB, south carolina and I'll be there again to do mini- seminars on using softplastics on trout and Puppiedrum. So if your there, stop by and say hello!!

1/27/07

No fishing for me but I'm still hearing there are some fish despite the drastic drop in water temps over the last few weeks. The bite in the Neuse is scattered on the trout with more sucess in the Bay River system for those that know where to go. But the fish have moved up the creeks but last weekend the fish that werere caught were still in rather shallow water...that kinda gets me to scratch my head...just goes to show you can't out think fish, you just have to be there fishing!!! Here in New Bern for Stripers, a few up the Trent from Wilson Creek to the Powerlines above River bend. Eels and bucktails way up river therer and Traps and stick baits therere in the lower parts of the trent along with live eels. Around the bridges...better action or at least better scattered action last week with the cooler water temps may be the reason to get them hanging around some of the regular areas for this time of year. Also, just above Hatteras in the thourafare behind Hog Island fishing on the edge of the deep holes using soft plastics took a few. Big Bass minnows fished on a slip bobber in the holes will also work. No work on some catfish action as yet but not to many of the guys are even fishing fir them may be that reason...it's pretty cold!!! On the upside of this...we seem to have a good season for the shad looking up..or at least better than last year with this water moving well in the low grounds. The Roanoke too is looking to be better poised for the upcoming Shad and Stripers with enough water to get the fish moving up river to Weldon.

I stoped by Field and Stream last week and saw a bunch of new tackel in...lots!!!! And they have an end cap with just Shad lures already waiting for you!! They have some combos for the shad that are easy on the wallet too. I saw some less than 30.00bucks..rod and reel!!! and don't forget the upcoming trout too. They have got you covered on that. Lots of Camo still andupcoming turkey season is just a few months away so get your calls and start talking turkey..

I still have the boat and I may keep it if it doesent sell by March. So...

It's time to begin thinking about the next year's bookings. I begin in March so drop a line to see what's on the ticket. April and may will find me on the Roanoke and here on the river and sound. March here on the river with the early shad and Trout and Stripers.

1/21/07

Fishing today and not a bump there in Hancock and the water temp was in the 45 deg area. Since the last report the fishing..at least for me has slowed. This is the time of year that I just dont have that much time to fish or post. I usally take the months of Jan and Feb off to get things done around the house and travel. Next week off to New Orleans for a week and fishing and a few shows to do and the anual Bass Pro spring classis in MB SC the end of Feb.

Now is a good time to stop by and see some of the new tackel and lures coming in at Field and Stream Sports in New Bern. They have a big shipment of Mirror Lures just in and expecting more on the way. And if you had any problems with your trolling motor this fall...now is a great time to get it looked at there at the areas repair shop. Also, now is a good time to check the batteries and top aff all the levels of fluids if they are the lead=acid type. If you are the type that lets their craft sit for a few months with no use, remove the batteries and take them inside your shop and charge them and keep a charge on them every few weeks to keep them topped off and ready for the spring. doing this will add a year to the life of them. Shad are just a few months away and I cant wait!!!

Hey, the boat is for sale. e-mail me if you are interested in a good boat for a good price. selling it for 15,000.00

1/2/07

New year and all so this will be a short one. First off, the Charter boat is for sale. makeing room for a new boat so this one will be sold. asking 16,000.00 call me or e-mail me with question regarding the boat.

There are still some trout being caught in all the creeks. We've had some pretty big rains as of late so just when the fishing starts to get right the rains move the fish again! But there are still some of the creeks off the Neuse that seem to produce. Better luck in most of the creeks down fron Minnisott were better. And a few off the main river at the mouths have had some luck. Capt. Gary Dubiel has still been able to put his clients on good numbers of fish through all of this rain..Way to get it done Capt!!! His link is on the Area Guides. Here close tothe New Bern area the stripers are kind of scattered around. Some up the river to Wheyhouser and Swift and some at the AR reef and off of Glenburnie and the RR tresstle. Some were up Brices creek way past the Airport. Only a few reported up the trent so far...just no cold water to push them into schools. For the most part live eels and Minnows are scoring well on the stripers and even a trout or two fell to the live eels when the guys were fishing for the stripers. When your hungry I guess you'll eat anything huh? Around the Car Bridges the bits is scattered from day to day. Take care and Happy New Year.

12/18/16

The fishing has picked up just a bit here around New Bern for the stripers. It aint crazy but at least a few fish were picked off that were over 18"ers. Some were taken on top waters ans some on Eels and live minnnows. The areas that seemed to have some action was above New Bern in the Glenburnine area. I have not been as yet this past week. But if the water temps drop again..just maybe the fisihng for the stripers will get better. Yesterday the trout bite was a bit off in the bayriver area...or at least in the creek I was in. The guys hung 5 and landed 3 trout. it was tuff but sometimes that winter trout fishing!! We caught them on Suspendng baits though on the Muddy flats in the creek that seemed to warm up a bit faster. We certinly had some nice bait around us but not to much happening. There wre lots of nets too. There were a few of the creeks in the Neuse that the guys pulled a few trout of over the last few days. Nice trout though!!! The weather now can now take a part in just how good the fising will be int he spring next year. If it warms up much more int he rivers, we may get a few more trout to migrate in to the creeks from the open waters to winter in the creeks. the water temps in Bay River yesterday was by my machine 54 surface by 1:30pm on the mud flats. Pretty warm for the winter!!  Here is a few tackle tips for this time of yar. This time of year I really like braided lines but braided lines are sometimes a pain when you get a loop on the spool. One of the biggest reasons for loops ont he spool is when you cast and click the bail over, if a loop of line is there the bail will pick up this loop and lay it on the reel spool. That's what will start it and when the loop is pulled off the spool with braided lines..it usally will end with some line salvages if you are not carfull in untangles the line. Never just pull the lines to remove a looped up tangle with braid cause most of the time it will cinch and get the clippers out! One of the best ways to avoid this is to manualy flip the bail your self and glance down to see if there is a loop and if so remove it before laying line over it. I have had some new Crystal fire line on now for 3 months....I don't think I'll use it again. It's white really and stays more white than dissapears in the water. I have reg. spider wire on the baitcasters and that seems to hold up well and blends well with water being green. I just put the 8lb on a Calcutta 150. Casting is pretty good but....backlashes usally result in some lost lures  cause the spiderwire has no strech!!!! It just snaps!

And another shamless plug for the guys @ Field and Stream Sports here in New Bern!!!! Sometimes it's just to stressfull to think of what to get some of the folks on your shoppiing list so go to the guys and get a Gift card!!! That's the easy part and they will thank you!!. A side fron the selection of fishing tackle, you will find a good selection of Clothes for any sportsman or guys that just wants to look sharp and stay warm. They even have some of the LumaNox watches that the Navy Seals wear!! Browning , Gerber and other brand knives and lots of ammo and archery supplies. It's a very nice place to shop and the staff will help find what ever you need. Don't forget, F&SS still has live minnows to get the stripers, trout and crappie.

A bit more later inthe week.

12/11/06

Did some fun fishing over the weekend with the family. The Trout were still biting even with the guts of creeks covered in thin ice. I did venture into the Bayriver area leaving some of the crowds I thought but found out that corwds were every where. I had tried most of every style of plastic and didn't even get a bump. Thinking the water to cold to get a fish to rise...the water was in the lower 40s, I took a chance on the new suspending Mirror Lures and twitched ever so slow and even bumpin the surface a few times the first trout came to the boat and others followed. But the Angler of the day...Buddy Rogers with his flyrod!! Buddy used a white clowser on and Intermed and caught over a dozen nice trout while I was there and had caught 6 before he got to me and no dougbt caught more after I left!!! WAY to to BUDDY!@!!!! Else wherer int he river, The stripers are still not happening like they ought to around the car bridge and I don't know why. There are still some trout in the creeks but with the lower temps start looking for the fish to warm a bit up on the mud flats of 4 to 6ft deep water off the deep ledges in the heat of the days.

12/4 06

Yep.. fell off the face of the earth with no reports for over two weeks...It's been just that busy!!!! but here is the report.

Where are the stripers here in the river???? I've fished for them 5 times and zero'd with the exception of one small one. There are a few in the creeks like Hancock and Upper Broad and goose but around the bridges and tretles the fishing for the stripers hs been slow for the most part. Why???? I really don't know but the absence of good bait may be some reason. The Trout fishing remain pretty good with some days better than others here in the river from Fairfield and all creeks on the northern side down to Slocum and Hancoock and around Great Island. With a good steady weather pattern for a few days the fishing will pick back up from the past weekend..although Saturday was good in some of the creeks off Bay river. Water temps rebounded last week and fell over the weekend along with some pretty good water rises from the winds but the water is again lowering from wind and this may take a day of so to get the bite and fish together. Mirror lures and plastics have been working. A live shrimp now is deadly here int he river and almost work the money and time to bring them here to fish with.. but, a plastic tht has been Lunker Sauced will work pretty good too. Colors this past week Red/ black/ and orange bbelly in the mirror lures and stick baits ans Gold flake and grey backed jerk style plastics work too. Old Bayside Shadlins in 4" pearl and a bit of Spike-It on the tail and belly will work too. Sorry for the later reply, more in the next few days

11/16/06

10 days since the last report so..I'll make a good one for yas. I have persoanaly done pretty good on trips with the clients since the last report and as long as the waters remain in the  temp ZONE the fishing should remain pretty good..maybe even really good!! First though a tech tip. Givin the opp, I'd rather fish topwater than anything else besides flyfishing but in lieu of that jig fishing is best and usally catches fish for the clients. the most common mistake that most make is not staying in touch with the jig. Short twitches really work better, especially after a cold front has cooled the water and the fish are reluctant to really chomp. A common mistake is to jerk the jig and this may give the extra slack between the rod tip and the lure so's not to transmit the suttle strikes. Also, Braided lines will not only transmit these "taps" to the rod tip better but given the thin diamenter of the same test mono, they really add a few extra yards to your cast. The only drawbacks are added cost and having to add an extra pc of Floracarbon tippit...and some folks don't even do that. All this stuff and more you can get at Field and Stream Sports. For the report, here goes. There were a few specks in the bridge piles on Tuesday and they were nice sized ones. I think there wree a few Stripers mixed in too. Jigs worked in white and mullet colors fished on 1/4oz jig heads. Old Bayside Shadlins are working for me and the clients. I have not begun looking for stripers in the Trent yet. But if the SW wind sets up to get the current heading out the stripers may school up along the Old Town area. I have had some luck on some of the piles onthe south end of the river too like around Dixie Che. The AR reef is now down to one bouy. There were some good sized trout taken this week from Broad and a few from goose. A few in Beards. Slocum and hancock have trout.....some dang big ones too. Dawson and the piers have slowed a bit but no dougbt pick up as the temps fall...always does! Lots of small puppie drum in the creeks down below Minnisott and even a few slots. Still a few good sized flounder too. It's mirror lure time now. take the time to learn how to make a trout bite these things. They really do work!!!

Next week..Bobber draggers explained!!  hhhhaaahaaa

11/6/06

i know this sounds like a broken record but the fishing is by most standards pretty darn goog!!! If you can't find a speckled trout now...you may need to take up knitting!! hhhaa There are really that many fish int he river and creeks. Last weeks temp drop did reduce the bite a bit but by Sunday the water had dropped all it was going to and monday the creeks really went off. From Goose to Orential and all the southern creeks, there were a bunck of fish caught...and I thik this trend will really con't for a while longer tapering off as the water chills in the lower water colume down below 50 degs. Remember that just because the upper surface temps say one thing the lower temps will..at first in the beginning not be as cool. A usefull little thing is in most dept stores. An indoor/outdoor themometer with the probe on a wire. Most of the wires are at least 8' so just tie on a little weight and ease it over to the bottom. Use this and get a feel for the temp difference. There are other used for this too. Maybe I'll pen somthing later on that. Most of the Trout are still taking the Old Bayside Shadlin in pearl and Mullet color for me. 1/4oz head works. Stillthe Yo-zuri C/Minnow in black back and blue back and the one with the orange belly of late works too. And of course the #52 Mirror lures are still kicking the usall trout butts. Not that many Pupie Drum up near new Bern of late but there is still a bunch of small to slots further down to the open water bays. A few stripers int he river in all the usall places. I have not found a large bunch of them but I still catch a few on topwaters in the stumpage along the river shore to Upper Broad Cr. It's getting bucktail and Rattlin Rouge time so dont forget to get a few and try them.

10/26/06

Neuse report.

A short report but a good one. the stripers have been chomping close to New Bern but the bite was off tonight. Boated 3 in the 17 to19" and missed quite a few more before leaving. Topwater chug-bug caught the 3 and had most hits on that too! Fun!!

Over the week the trout have slowed down here in the river close to New Bern but the ones caught were nice ones. 18miles down river though its a different story. Lots of specks that way!! very class of fish. Sub-surface and topwaters and soft plastics are working. On the water today and this weekend too@ athe beach and river. So reprt more later.

10/20/06

Neuse Report

Well the fishing conts to be really good here in the New Bern area. The stripers are still taking a few topwaters. Up above New Bern past Hatteras there have been a few pods of stripers that did just that. But there seems to be a few more fish down river still in the main river and just off the river near to the mouths of the creeks no doubt taking advantage of the bait leaving the creeks. They are near some drop-offs and structure. There have been some caught this week in the most unusual places on the river. A few were caught busting on the shoal just off Broad Creek in the middle of the big part of the river. Soft plastics in Pearl and naturally colors are doing the job here. If you have some Spike-It, you can get your plastics to have a orange belly and that works sometimes. I still soak the plastics in the Lunker Saucejust dont lick your fingers after..Yeccchhhhh! The Speckled Troutfor those that have missed the action were caught right here in New Bern this week. Most guys were getting a good limit on their trips. This action will come and go but the fact remainsthere is a great crop of Specks this year. Up in the river plastics workthe green grub, Pearl, green with the red tail, white with the red tail and black and red back #52 mirrors lures will help you find fish. In the deeper water they are not AS spooky but if you dont have a electric trolling motor just anchor or drift to fish there in the big part of the river. The AR Reef was doing okay too. Further down river..the bite has been better on the hole with very nice fish caught as the weather permits getting there. Plastics are working just fine. The fish are hitting artificial pretty aggressively.

Dont forget that Field and Stream Sports has all the lures it takes to put you limit of fish in the cooler. Just ask whats the hot baits!!!!! They will Hook you up.

10/15/06

Yep..late report!! Got heckled by at least 4 guys over the weekend because I have not done a report this weekapologies!! Here goes the report.

From New Bern Down river, The Stripers around New Bern have started and are getting grouped up and staying in schools a bit better. They are also starting to bite early in the morning and late in the evening with pretty dependable results. As of now they are taking both top water baits as well as the usually soft plastics. Top water baits include the Spooks, poppers and most of the walking the dog baits.  Colors that work the best are the Naturals (mullets) and sometimes the ones with orange bellies. Plastics in White or naturals. Old Bayside Shadlins in Pearl and Mullet are working for me here in the river fished on the 1/4oz head, Placesupriver past Hatteras and the RR trestles and the Car bridges and the shoreline to Upper Broad. Even the AR has had some good days lately.

The Speckled Trout are a bit further down river starting at Upper Broad and just about most of the creeks and mouths of the creeks all the way to Bayriver. Up the ICW has been also showing a few nice sized fish along with some smaller fish. Live, Plastics and Mirror Lures are putting fish to the side of the boat. The water is still warm but the cool nights will drop the temps pretty quick and that will really make the fish stack on the points and mouths of the creeks as the baitfish leave the Neuse. The Glass minnows are on their way out to the ocean too. Colors that have been working for me are The Red backs Mirror lures and also the new Suspending ones. There are some nice sized Slot Puppie Drum in the river down past Minnisott on both sides of the river. Live bait, soft plastics will get it done. Fish the shoreline and marsh edges. Some flounder are still around Dawson Creek area too. Oriental area has a good number of Specks and Puppie drum

11/4/06

Sorry for the belated report, I got very busy last week. The good news is the fishing is pretty consistantly Great, with a few so-so days mixed in. I havent heard of any big catfish of late but my attention has been not there and just havent asked the crew that usally target those fish. Here around New Bern and the bridges, the stripers have started to find their way back to the structure and along the shorlines that have some structure (stumpage and old piles) and are taking just about anything that you toss. Even the big ole spinners for the redfish did well for me last week int he rough water. Those things really have some thumPP!! Top waters are indeed working for the stripers and the trout now. This will cont untill the water cools below 58 then it will taper off abit untill that topwater bite is replaced with the subsurface baits like some of the New Mirrorlures and the suspending stick baits as well. The Old Bayside Shadlin in 3" in opening night spiked with orange has done well as has the pearl color. Same inthe Old Bayside Mudminno. Just down from New Bern the trout and stripers are hitting most all bait at one time or the other. I fish topwaters and soft plastics there. There have been fish (striper,Trout, redfish) in all the creeks from Upper Broad to Adams on both sides of the Neuse. The bait is stacked up in the river for sure and I have seen some of the biggestPogeys ever!! and lots of Glass minnows schools too. It's all in place for a great month of October...but, we got a big low coming this weekend and with it a bunch of rain...But that should not really matter. I may go fishing in the rain!! see you soon and get out and fish!!

I still have a few open dates for both here on the river and the coast this month if a weekend will work.

9/25/06 Neuse report

Skipping back a few days, had the pleasure of fishing with Mr. George. this time on his boat. We drove down to Goose and Broad and did a bit of fishing there. There were some fish there..and a few nice ones too. The small puppies are in and around most of the creeks still and are fun to catch. Seems like they just keep on keeping on. I caught one last week that had its gill almost shaved off.result from what looked like a gillnet with two long cuts on his tail..and still bit!! Hardy fish no doubt! Ill give a report on Thursday with just the NRBWO in mind. That report will be a composite to use as a barometer on where the fish may be heading.with any hope!!!

Over the weekend the little breeze made fishing conditions very pleasant and easy traveling up and down the river. Yeah RIGHT!! If  Saturday was tuff you should have been on the river today. But I digress, The past week still saw some Catfish up above Cowpen but not the big ones of earlier weeks. Still good fishing though. In and around New Bern the stripers have beennot so easy for me to find??They are further down the river but not stacked up like they usally are around the Bridge. They moved with all the fresh water but Id though theyd move back by now? But then I havent fished for them in and around the NRRRT and the Gap..maybe there. There was some pretty good specks and a few slot Puppie Drum caught around Broad and Goose. They took topwaters and spinners and soft plastics. Further down on all the creeks on the south end there were solid reports of Specks and small puppie drum. And still down further on the north side of the river (Dawson, Oriental and Upper Broad) there have been some specks and puppie Drum to the boats. White plastics seem to work good up that way.

We have a good number of boats going to fish the tournament this year. There has been some new sponsors added to the NRBWO site. We THANK them for the help.

Look for a report on Thursday and SEE all @ the NRBWO meeting on Friday @ Lawson Creek Park Pavilion @ 6:00pm

Fishing cont to be getting better and more consistant closer to the New Bern. There is still a good bit of fresh water cming down from the trent though. This fresh mix seems to be haveing some down effect to the stripers that have been used to staying ont he trent side of the neuse under the bridge. I fished there three nights and nothing.Starting from upper broad and goose the specks and puppie drun are starting to show up a bit more. White plastics work. There have been some better action further down and from Dawson on down the river the bite has been awsome at times. We ae fast approching the NRBWO tournament. Looking forward to that. This is just a internm report. more later in the week.

And..catch some more reports on

Neuse Report. Man it really is getting good here on the Neuse!! There were lots of small speckled trout in the river and a decent amount of them in the sound also.  The water here in the river is starting to level out from Ernesto and the salinity levels are still low here in the New Bern area but are trending upwards so that is a good thing. Above New Bern the big Catfish cont to keep the boys fishing for them busy in the evenings. Most are caught on bream. A few are really big but good amounts are in the Teens. Keep a few but let most of the big ones go please..they are old fish and once gone takes a long time to replace…there are still some pretty good Bream to catch and bass too. Closer to New Bern the Stripers are still showing up and sometimes in good numbers. While the smaller ones are a bunch of fun to catch there are some pretty good reports of a few in the upper 20’s inches being caught. Topwaters and soft plastics work. I really like to jig around the car bridge with the Old Bayside Shadlins on a 1/4oz head with a white or pearl and sometimes a mullet color and will try to spike-it if needed. Fished slow as the weather and current will allow. The AR has had some fish but the fresh water moved a bunch of the bait down the river and that has not been as productive of late. It can come back and be hot so keep checking it on your way past it. Topwaters and Traps have always worked best for me personally. And further down the river past Broad and Goose there are some of the stripers along the banks…find the bait and the stripers will show up to eat. Keep a big ole spook rigged up and handy. Field and stream Sports has a good selection of the ones that work best here in the river…Now..for the glamour fish!!!hhahaaa. The specks and Puppie Drum are in the Neuse River as good as I can remember for this time of year. Some days the specks are nice sized (14 to17’) and the next day they will be on the small side or under the sized..go figure that one…but Specks none the less are there in good numbers from Upper Broad to Oriental and across the river too. I start fishing outside and work in the creeks. If the water is just right the topwater will be tossed for that trout that will take it..I just really like seeing that..It’s a treat for sure. And some puppie drum are there too. Smaller under the slots mostly but lots of them to stay fun. Sauced (shrimp)up shadlins and other jerk styles have been working. My friend Brandon and Kary had a blast Sunday fishing. I let Brandon furnish the detail to that if he chooses….it is getting close to the NRBWO tournament !!! More reports later in the week.

This morning the trout bite was acutaly pretty good! After locating a few and narrowing down what they wanted the guys began working on a nice limit of 14 to 17in specks. I think we boated and released a total of a litle over 30 fish and had lots of hits....on....NOT GULPS!

Old Bayside 3" Shadlins soaked overnight in Lunker Sauce. Fished on a 1/4oz jig had. Today the fish wanted it dragged on the bottom and fed to.  The color that worked today was the Opening night with a Fire tail. Also pearl with the tail dyed with Spike-IT in hot pink. We put a few to the boat with mirror lures 52m in 750. And even a few on fly. While Gulps would have caught some fish, I would have spent a fortune with all the small blufish.

A nice day on the water.

9/11/06  Neuse River Report

A pretty important date here for sure!! I moment of prayer..Thank you God. Thoughts to those who lost, Gave and are still giving so I can write this in ENGLISH!!

Got a bit behind in updates but the fishing has been pretty good my most measures. The past week that I fished here in the river the puppie Drum are still there in force! Lots of 12 to 15 inchers along with some decent stripers. The water is a bit stained close to New Bern mostly by the storm runoff but the next weeks should see that moderate somewhat and things should normalize close to town. Upriver the large Catfish are still there with the high water not affecting the fish at all. There were some caught in the 30 and over class the past week. Most on bream as bait. BIG KITTYS!!!  The water did affect the fishing a bit by moving the bait further downriver about 6 to 9 miles and the fish moved with it for the most part. Some of the puppie drum stayed and they are very dark in color and their fins took on a very reddish huedifferent looking but it didnt depreciate their appetite and they were chomping. Better baits this week. Old Bayside Shadlins in Pearl and also Charturce Green fished on a OBS 1/4oz jig head. My friend George H. uses a 1/8oz head with a Gulp Pogy and did well here in the river. There was some decent Trout caught over the past week and the fishing should be getting a bit better. The salinity in the big part of the river is still pretty good and oxygen levels are improving a bit too. The Trout will be taking some of the more popular stick baits soon here in the river. The mirror lures and Yo-zuris will be fine. Red backs in 52m are always a good start. The Big Drum have really been biting great and this fishing is going to be going on for at least another few weeks.. Lots of the Guides there in the river getting double digits to the boats most days and everybody getting some fish.FRESH BAIT>>>thats the ticket!!

Charters later in the week so I update in a bit later in the week.

9/3/06

Well the water is still in good shape and the fishing close to New Bern is going to be just fine is the weekend is any indication of that. Still lots of bait in the river and the fish are starting to come closer to shore. With any luck the storms will miss us here the rest of the year. The end of the month will be the NRBWO and it'l looking ogreat for that. As I write this Brandon in doing very well ont he old Drum last count was 4 for 5 released as he left a quick message on the phone. He'll most likly make a good report soon on taht trip.

9/1/06 forcast

What effect will the rain have on the upper neuse? Well we got almost 5.25 here on my gage at the house so I guess that there was at least that much elsewhere. Rain..or lack of, does play into the fishanomics. Somtimes the greater salinity will let some fish that usally inhabit the river further down come and visit the upper parts of the system. I have on past ocasions caught Spanish @ the old NB bridge and three years ago there were tarpon @ the Maola plant above the NRRRTrestle. But what effect does the influence of a bunch of fresh rainwater do to the fish? I think (get this, I have no degree, but I do think on ocasion) it depends of a few differeint factors. One, What was the salinity of the water before and how much water fell. Two, how fast it (the rain water) can be dispersed or deluted. Since the Neuse river emptys to the sound as does other rivers, the sound just doesent have a good wat to purge itself of the rainwater. So, it slowly exchanges via the few inlets to the sea it has. Also the infuince of the fresh water may not stratify or mix with out some help from nature in the form of wind to help mmix the upper and lower water spectrums. Bla, Bla Blaa. So here is my take for the next week.

With the salinity levels pre-storm in good shape, the fishing should return to normal levels here in the upper streches in a few days to a week for the Specks and Puppie Drum and may be decent for stripers as soon as the silt lays down. Further down river from Minnisott whre the river is pretty wide, the rain may not have near the impact due to the vast water volume there to begin with. Just the creeks will be effected. If may move the baitfish and shrimp out to the mouths so it may just get the fish stacked out in the river just outside the creeks. After floyd,,,the fish got pretty good right after the storm but quickly pettered with the huge deluge of all the stuff that came down. The bait left and it wasent till november the fishing got good again.

I'll most likly hit the river Saturday afternoon to see what's up and report in.

8/28/06 report

The fishing cont to be pretty good here in New Bern area and further down the river. Starting from New Bern and working down river. There are still a few guys catching some of the big catfish above the paper plant using bream and mullet for bait on the bottom. Still some pretty big kittys I must say!!! Around New Bern, the small puppie drum and a few slot puppie drum have been caught from the bank from the NRRR trestle al the way to Goose Creek. You really just need to find where they are. Soft plastics, some topwater and fresh finger mullet are choice baits. Also, more and more times we are getting a mix of fish all in the same area. Some decent specks numbers are being had in the New Bern area along with the usual Stripers so a SLAM is a good possibility and will get better…..if the storm doesn’t mess it up!!! Further down from New Bern from Upper Broad to Minnisott on the Northern side of the river, the bite has been good but will get more consistent as we head to the cooler temps and shorter days. I think that the shorter days signal, at least to the fish, it’s getting time to move in the river and eat like crazy. Most of the better bites of late have been very early in the day or dusk. Typical fishing times for this time of the year. I’d try the points of all the creeks and just in the mouths or the creeks and along drop-offs. Now it seams the stumpage is holding more fish so I’ve been targeting the cover for fish.  More later in the week.

8/25/06

Bite was decent tonight with some nice sized Puppie Drum in the mix. We got one that was close to 25" and heavy. a few stripers in the mix too!! Lots of bait down river and lots of shrimp popping. No Specks today. Fish were caught on Old Bayside Shadlin in Pearl and Opening night with green tail using a 1/4" head twitched. Fishing most of the weekend so post later on. BTW the big drum are really making a good showing.

8/24/06

I'll make mine a short one now and a updat on friday night. The water in the river is a bit fresh with the rain this week. But a few friends have been fishing and done well inspite of it!! Pretty solid reports of stripers and trout and flounder and a few puppie drum mixed in. Soft plastics, spinner bait and topwaters. I like to use the popping corks to find the fish. A live shrimp is pure poisin on a hook now!! Old Byside shadlins in Gold flake and pearl on a 1/4oz head twiched off the bottom will get the job done.

Now for Brandon's report:

Neusefishers Report:

My report for this week isnt much different than last.  The stripers are still biting topwaters around New Bern, although I couldnt get one to bite Tuesday night.  I think it had more to do with us fishing just after the rain storm/front moved through.  I have talked to people who have been having luck on the trout, drum and flounder at all of the creek mouths and along shoreline structure on the Neuse.  There were even some reports of big slot sized drum being picked up very very close to New Bern.  My favorite keeper drum lure is the lilfishie, but when targeting bigger fish, its hard to be a spinner bait with a Gulp! grub replacing the standard skirt.  If you really want to catch a drum, try finding some shore line structure on the Neuse and soak some crabs.  The way I do it is to pot of the top shell of a LIVE crab AFTER cutting off all the claws and legs.  I then cut this topless crab core in half or quarters depending how big the crab is. I fish the crabs on a Carolina rig like used for flounder fishing with a 1 oz weight or less.   I hook a 5/0 circle sea hook (they have everything you need at Field and Stream Sports in New Bern) through the area where a leg joint meets the main body.  There should be a soft area there that will accept the hook with ease.  This time of year you have to check your bait about ever 10-15 minutes, but if there is a drum in the area, he will find it.  Im going Drumming this weekend so I should have a report for the big boys next week.  Everyone be safe and take a kid with you if you get the chance.

8/22/06

The bite was on early in the morning. Stripers. Topwaters did it.

8/20/06

A quick report. There was a good Stripers bite the past week for topwater guys. I got my limit most times ont he river inthe mornig. Some of the best bites were later in the evening though. They are in the river from the car bridge to Upper Broad cr. Big Spooks and PopRs.

Check out the new page Coastal reports for the coast reports.

BTW, I have deleated a bunch of fishing reports fromt he site and archived them in a word Doc that I can mail to anybody that wants some history. More reports a bit later

8/18/06

Great reports of fishing this week here on the Neuse and the sounds and even Near shore too.  Starting Next month, I will have two reports pages. this one and one for the beach. I figured that since I'm fishng 50% of the time there I should include that detail too!First, there is a good amount of really good sized catfish up the Neuse above Cool springs. Most are being caught on Fresh Bream fished on the bottom of the river. Use some pretty stiff tackle for these brutes as a few of them have been very close to 50#s!!! The Temps have moderated a bit and the fishing has picked up a bit too. There have been a good amount of Stripers in the river and they have been taking topwaters and others. Best topwater? Spooks that look like mullets. Go by Field and stream sports to get the best colors. Thats where I get mine. From the artificial reef to the car and RR trestles the stripers have been chomping. Further down the river on the north side, the Puppie Drum had made a pretty good showing in the stumps and shore edges. Banks with 2ft of water against the cattails and grass are best. Add stumps and its better. Flounder mixed in too!

Pieces of hard crab, Beatle Spins with white trailers and soft plastics in White and charturce word real good with the crab being the choice bait. Old Bayside Shadlins worked very well on a 1/4oz head fished with a med retrieve and twitched up off the bottom. Top waters like stick baits work well and wont get hung up as frequently. There are a bunch of small to med trout just down from Broad Creek. That fishery will get better as the weeks get into late August and September. This is poised to be one of the best Trout seasons!!! Out in the sound the Old Drum fishing is getting on the verge of HOT!!!! Its very dependable now and will get better. Bait of choice of the old drum??? FRESH BAIT!!! Just make sure what ever you are using is as fresh as can be. The guys @ F&SS have some Sabki rods still and these make great bait getting tools not only for the drum fishng but jigging up bait to hit the livewell there at
